Ronald Miller, a former Marine, instinctively grabbed for the barrel of the gun as the assailant threatened him. In the ensuing struggle, the gunman fired a single shot. The bullet passed through Ronald Miller's arm and tragically struck his wife in the chest. Julie Miller was rushed to University Medical Center, but she succumbed to her injuries and passed away. Her husband was treated for his wound and released. The couple had been married for 49 years and had a daughter and four grandchildren.
The suspect was described as a Black man, approximately 30 years old and six feet tall, with a thin to medium build. He was reportedly wearing a khaki shirt, dark pants, and a baseball cap at the time of the incident. Police believe he fled the scene in a silver Dodge Magnum, possibly with two other individuals. Surveillance video captured the suspect's escape, but the quality was not clear enough to read the license plate. In the years following the murder, the case grew cold. The Suncoast casino offered a substantial reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, but no suspects have been publicly identified or apprehended in connection with the senseless killing of Julie Miller. The profound loss deeply affected her family, with her husband's health declining in the years following the traumatic event.
