On August 28, 2023, at approximately 1:02 p.m., the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's emergency services received a report of gunfire within Caudill Laboratories, a central campus facility. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered 38-year-old Associate Professor Zijie Yan, a distinguished member of the Department of Applied Physical Sciences, deceased from multiple gunshot wounds.
