On August 28, 2023, at approximately 1:02 p.m., the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's emergency services received a report of gunfire within Caudill Laboratories, a central campus facility. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered 38-year-old Associate Professor Zijie Yan, a distinguished member of the Department of Applied Physical Sciences, deceased from multiple gunshot wounds.
The university promptly initiated a campus-wide lockdown, advising students and faculty to shelter in place while authorities searched for the assailant. Approximately an hour and a half later, 34-year-old Tailei Qi, a graduate student under Professor Yan's supervision, was apprehended off-campus. Qi was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm on educational property.
Investigations revealed that Qi had recently acquired a firearm, despite his status as an international student on a nonimmigrant visa, which legally prohibited such a purchase. In the days leading up to the incident, Qi had visited a local firing range for practice sessions.
Following his arrest, Qi underwent a court-ordered mental health evaluation. In November 2023, he was deemed unfit to stand trial due to untreated schizophrenia and was committed to a state psychiatric facility for treatment.
The tragic death of Professor Yan, a respected researcher and mentor, profoundly impacted the UNC-Chapel Hill community. In response, the university implemented enhanced safety protocols and support services to address the emotional and psychological well-being of students and staff.
As of December 2024, Qi remains under psychiatric care, with his legal proceedings on hold pending a reassessment of his competency to participate in his defense. The university continues to honor Professor Yan's legacy through memorials and by fostering a commitment to campus safety and mental health awareness.
