Michael Deshai Lee, a 51-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on September 27, 2022, at the University Gardens Condominiums in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The incident occurred just after 6:15 p.m., and responding officers found Michael Deshai Lee dead from a gunshot wound. Three other individuals were injured in the shooting but survived.
A week after the shooting, authorities arrested Michael Jerome Henry, a 29-year-old male from Durham, North Carolina.
Henry was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals along with the Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force. He has been charged with murder, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, assault with a deadly weapon, and shooting into an occupied vehicle. Henry is currently being held at the Orange County Detention Center with no bond.
The motive for the shooting has not been released, and the investigation is ongoing. Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue expressed gratitude for the community's cooperation and the efforts of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force in bringing Henry to justice. The police continue to seek information from the public to aid in the investigation.
Michael Deshai Lee was born on January 2, 1971, in Orange County, North Carolina. He was a beloved member of his community and enjoyed making things with wood, playing basketball, baseball, football, and fishing. He was preceded in death by his mother, Cathy Ann Lee, and several other family members. He is survived by his father, Robert Neville, maternal grandmother, Pearl Lee, and numerous other relatives and friends.
