Malik Devon Brown Burnette, an 18-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on July 26, 2016, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Malik was gunned down in a cul-de-sac on Jackie Robinson Street near Adelaide Walters Street, shortly before 10 p.m. that night. The shooting also left another 18-year-old male, Tanner Cobb, injured. Malik was pronounced dead at UNC Hospitals, while Tanner was treated and remained in stable condition.
The Chapel Hill Police Department quickly
launched an investigation into the double shooting. Five individuals were arrested in connection with the incident. Laquida Shuntae Poston, 26, Ranaire Lewis II, 22, Thomas Oliver, 30, Jalen Raekwon Hackney, 18, and Denzel Lamont Spikes, 23, were all charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery, and accessory after the fact. All suspects, except for Spikes, were held at the Orange County Jail without bond. Spikes was arrested in Lexington, South Carolina, and awaited extradition to North Carolina.
The community of Chapel Hill mourned the loss of Malik, holding a candlelight vigil to honor his memory. Over 200 people gathered to share memories, sing songs, and call for an end to gun violence. Family and friends described Malik as a well-liked, respectable young man with great character. His cousin, Lavonda Burnette, emphasized that Malik was not involved in any criminal activities and that his life meant more than the few hundred dollars that may have been the motive behind the shooting.

In response, community organizer "Equality" promoted "Malik's Village," a program designed to encourage healthy lifestyles and activities for young people. The program aimed to create a supportive environment for children and teens, helping to prevent future incidents of violence.
The case against the five suspects continued to unfold, with their next court date set for August 15, 2016. The community remained hopeful that justice would be served for Malik and that his death would serve as a catalyst for positive change in Chapel Hill.
