Dearie William Bourne, a 21-year-old male from Chapel Hill, NC, tragically lost his life on February 19, 2021, in a shooting incident at the Camelot Village Apartments on Estes Drive near Willow Drive. The Chapel Hill Police Department responded to reports of gunfire around 2:40 p.m. and found Bourne with fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Bourne's death led to the arrest of two suspects.
Donavyn Lee Mayfield, a 20-year-old male from Carrboro, was arrested on March 3, 2021. He was charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, breaking and entering, and larceny. Mayfield was taken into custody by a U.S. Marshal’s Task Force and is being held at the Orange County Jail without bond.
Jermaine Malik Jahquan Chance, a 21-year-old male from Mebane, was also arrested in connection with the shooting. He was charged with first-degree murder, breaking and entering, larceny, and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling. Chance was taken into custody on February 20, 2021, and is also being held at the Orange County Jail without bond.
The Chapel Hill Police Department has stated that the murder did not appear to be a random incident. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.
