In the early hours of July 17, 2024, at approximately 1:04 a.m., Chapel Hill Police responded to reports of a shooting in the 100 block of Ashley Forest Road, near an apartment complex. Upon arrival, officers discovered 37-year-old Adam Abdur-Rahman suffering from a gunshot wound. He was promptly transported to UNC Hospitals, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The ensuing investigation led authorities to arrest 45-year-old Mario Thompson, a resident of the same apartment complex. Thompson was charged with first-degree murder and two counts of discharging a weapon into occupied property. He was taken into custody and held at the Orange County Detention Center without bond. His initial court appearance was scheduled for the afternoon following his arrest.
Friends and acquaintances of Abdur-Rahman expressed profound shock and grief over his untimely death.
