In the early morning hours of Sunday, June 22, 2025, the sound of gunshots shattered the predawn quiet of the Kingman Park neighborhood in Northeast Washington, D.C. Responding to the sound, Metropolitan Police Department officers on patrol discovered a grim scene in the 1800 block of D Street, Northeast. Two men were found unconscious and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
One of the victims was identified as 41-year-old Cortney Burley, a male resident of Southeast, D.C.
Despite the immediate response and efforts of D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services, both Burley and the second victim, 30-year-old Quonzay Lynch of Northeast, D.C., were pronounced dead at the scene. The incident was quickly classified as a double homicide, prompting an extensive investigation by homicide detectives.
In the wake of the fatal shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department has appealed to the public for assistance in gathering information regarding the incident. Authorities have not released any information about potential motives or circumstances that led to the shooting. As of late 2025, no arrests have been made in connection with the deaths of Cortney Burley and Quonzay Lynch, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case remains an open and active investigation. The police department is offering a substantial reward of up to $50,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the double homicide.
