On the evening of April 4, 2021, in the 1800 block of 24th Street, Northeast, a dispute between childhood friends escalated into a fatal encounter. Dontra Harris, a 33-year-old male, was shot and killed in what authorities described as an ambush. The incident began with a roadside argument between Harris and his longtime friend, Jean Paul Kearney. Following the verbal altercation, the two men went their separate ways.
Kearney, however, proceeded to his nearby home, where he exchanged his
motorcycle for his mother's vehicle. He then drove to Harris's apartment building and lay in wait. As Harris attempted to enter his residence, Kearney emerged and shot him multiple times in the back. When law enforcement and emergency services arrived at the scene, they discovered Harris near the front of the building and pronounced him dead. The investigation into the shooting led the Metropolitan Police Department to identify Kearney as the primary suspect.
On May 13, 2021, members of the Gun Recovery Unit executed a search warrant at Kearney's residence. During the execution of the warrant, Kearney fired an AK-47 assault rifle at the officers multiple times. He was subsequently arrested and taken into custody. Following his arrest, Kearney, upon learning his cellphone had been confiscated, instructed a family member over the phone on how to remotely erase its contents. Jean Paul Kearney was charged with second-degree murder while armed. He later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of his childhood friend.
