In the afternoon hours of January 26, 2025, a tragedy unfolded in Southwest Washington, D.C., that cut short the life of 14-year-old Myron Smith, an African American male. The incident began around 2:28 p.m. in the 4000 block of South Capitol Street, Southwest, where Smith was shot multiple times. Responding officers from the Metropolitan Police Department found the young man suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital by emergency services, but despite all lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead.
The preliminary investigation revealed a harrowing story of a robbery that turned fatal. Smith was reportedly outside his apartment building when he was accosted by individuals who had exited a stolen white Kia Optima. Surveillance video captured parts of the encounter, showing the assailants attempting to rob him. An altercation ensued, and during the struggle, Smith was shot. After the shooting, the suspects fled the scene in the Kia.
The Metropolitan Police Department quickly issued a lookout for the stolen vehicle. Officers from the Sixth District soon located the car and apprehended its occupants. During the stop, police recovered two firearms. The investigation led to the arrest of three teenage suspects from Northeast, D.C. A 14-year-old male was charged with felony murder and carrying a pistol without a license. Additionally, two 16-year-old males were arrested and charged with carrying a pistol without a license.
In the aftermath of the shooting, court proceedings began for the accused. The 14-year-old charged with murder later rejected a plea deal offered by prosecutors, opting to go to trial. The case has highlighted the ongoing concerns about juvenile crime and gun violence in the District of Columbia, leaving a community to mourn the loss of a young life taken too soon.
