Aaron Hammer, 46, a male, was shot in Compton late in the night and later died at a hospital. According to officials, gunfire erupted at about 10:40 p.m. in the 13000 block of South Long Beach Boulevard, between Alondra and Greenleaf boulevards. He was publicly identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner in the days that followed, and loved ones later memorialized him in an obituary noting his death in the early hours of the next morning.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, deputies spotted a vehicle linked to the attack on the westbound 91 Freeway and initiated a pursuit. During the chase, the suspects allegedly fired at deputies before exiting the freeway, abandoning their car near 139th Street and Parmlee Avenue, and running into a nearby neighborhood. A perimeter was set up around the 14100 block of South Zamora Avenue as additional units flooded the area through the night.
By morning, three suspects believed to be connected to the fatal shooting were in custody after a block-by-block search. Authorities said the arrests followed the pursuit and the suspects’ alleged gunfire at deputies; however, officials did not immediately release the suspects’ names or describe a motive. Investigators continued to ask anyone with information to contact the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.
The medical examiner’s identification made clear who the victim was; community and memorial pages recorded the date of the killing in Compton and marked his loss. While early online listings varied on the precise date, official reports and the obituary placed the shooting late at night with Hammer pronounced dead soon after.
