Richard Hartung, 64, male, lived quietly in a camper set inside a fenced storage lot in San Diego’s Nestor neighborhood. In the dark, early hours of August 30, 2025—around 3:25 to 3:30 a.m.—neighbors heard gunfire near the 2000 block of Sunset Avenue, about a mile and a half north of the border. Officers arrived to find two separate camper trailers and two men fatally shot inside them: Hartung and 42-year-old Aaron Cruz.
Both men resided in the trailers at the site, a complex of individually fenced industrial lots.
Detectives pieced together the path out of the lot using city and private security cameras, narrowing in on a red Chevy Suburban spotted near the scene. Two days later, during a traffic stop on September 2, police arrested 24-year-old David Verduzco Kruglova and booked him on two counts of murder tied to the killings. The break in the case did not end there. Within the following weeks, investigators announced the arrest of a second suspect, a 16-year-old Tijuana resident, followed by a third suspect, 22-year-old Marco Ramos Ramirez. Each was taken into custody on suspicion of participating in the double homicide that claimed Hartung’s life.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive or detailed any relationship among the suspects and the two victims. The case moved forward as prosecutors prepared murder charges while the community learned Hartung’s name and the stark circumstances of his final morning—two trailers, two lives cut short, and a string of arrests that traced back through cameras, a distinctive SUV, and a methodical canvass of the South Bay.
