Richard Hartung, 64, male, lived quietly in a camper set inside a fenced storage lot in San Diego’s Nestor neighborhood. In the dark, early hours of August 30, 2025—around 3:25 to 3:30 a.m.—neighbors heard gunfire near the 2000 block of Sunset Avenue, about a mile and a half north of the border. Officers arrived to find two separate camper trailers and two men fatally shot inside them: Hartung and 42-year-old Aaron Cruz.
