Diosado Gumbayan, 73, a male Asian resident of San Diego, was found dead in the early morning hours of June 3, 2025, on the 4600 block of Olive Street along the edge of the Swan Canyon area in City Heights. Around 3:23 a.m., a nearby witness heard a single gunshot and looked outside to see a man lying in the street with another figure dressed in all black standing over him before fleeing on foot; officers arrived to find Gumbayan between two parked vehicles and pronounced him deceased at the
scene.
Police canvassed the canyon and surrounding streets but were unable to immediately locate the person in black, and detectives began gathering surveillance footage and witness statements while processing the scene. The victim’s identity was confirmed later in the week as Diosado Gumbayan, a 73-year-old resident of San Diego, as authorities continued to search for a suspect and motive.
Investigators quickly developed leads pointing to a teenage suspect. On June 5, officers arrested a 17-year-old near Euclid Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard; the youth, whose name was withheld because he is a minor, was booked into San Diego Juvenile Hall on suspicion of murder. Authorities did not disclose a motive at the time and asked anyone with additional information to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers.
By June 6, police publicly announced the arrest in the Swan Canyon homicide and reiterated the sequence of events reported by the witness: a single gunshot, a figure dressed head-to-toe in black, and a swift escape into the alley southbound from 46th Street. Local outlets later recapped the case, noting that detectives had identified the juvenile suspect through their investigation and that the case remained one count of murder pending further proceedings.
