Antwan Bluthenthal, 46, a Black male, was shot on the third floor of a building at 701 Sixth Avenue in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter on the evening of August 3, 2025, after visiting the Cielo Rooftop Lounge on the fifth floor. Police and paramedics found him in a hallway with at least one gunshot wound; despite first aid at the scene, he died of his injuries. Witnesses inside the building detained a man on the sidewalk and pointed officers to a recovered handgun. Investigators later noted that while the shooting occurred on the third floor, both men had been patrons of the rooftop bar accessed by an elevator that also serves other venues in the building.

San Diego police identified the victim as Antwan Bluthenthal, also known as Antwan Blu, a local resident. Detectives said the confrontation began as a physical altercation between two people and escalated when one produced a firearm. The victim and the suspect were not believed to know one another prior to the encounter.

Officers arrested 37-year-old Bryan Tyner on suspicion of murder. He was booked into county jail and later arraigned in San Diego Superior Court, where he pleaded not guilty to a murder charge and an additional misdemeanor count of carrying a concealed firearm. A judge declined to set bail, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for January 13, 2026, while Tyner remained in custody.
