On April 14, 2004, Mario Alvarez, a 41-year-old resident of San Diego, was fatally shot in front of his home on Cottonwood Drive while fixing his nephew's bicycle. Earlier in the day, Alvarez had intervened to help his next-door neighbor during a confrontation between a man in a car and a woman who appeared to be in distress in an alley behind the neighbor's apartment.
