Do you know who murdered Mario? On April 14, 2004, Mario Alvarez, a 41-year-old resident of San Diego, was fatally shot in front of his home on Cottonwood Drive while fixing his nephew's bicycle. Earlier in the day, Alvarez had intervened to help his next-door neighbor during a confrontation between a man in a car and a woman who appeared to be in distress in an alley behind the neighbor's apartment. The man left the scene after the confrontation, but later returned with another individual in the car.
As Alvarez was working on the bicycle later that evening, the car approached again, and the passenger leaned out of the vehicle, shooting Alvarez multiple times. The car then sped away. Witnesses described the suspect as a Hispanic male in his mid-30s to mid-40s, with short hair and a short beard. The vehicle was described as a medium-dark blue or turquoise early-to-mid 90s Nissan Sentra XE, with distinctive custom chrome spoke rims. The license plate was partially remembered, but has not led to the identification of the vehicle or suspects involved.
The police have been investigating the case as a possible act of retaliation, given the earlier confrontation involving Alvarez. Despite significant efforts, the case remains unsolved, and detectives have reached out to the public for assistance, noting that the suspect vehicle was seen frequenting areas known for prostitution along Main Street. Authorities are hopeful that someone might still come forward with information that could help bring justice to Alvarez’s family and solve this long-standing cold case. The San Diego Police Department continues to seek tips to aid in closing the case, which remains part of their ongoing cold case investigations.
