In the Newhallville neighborhood of New Haven, Connecticut, a bright life was tragically cut short on the evening of Saturday, September 27, 2025. Kaiden Phillips, a 15-year-old Black male, was found unresponsive with apparent gunshot wounds on the ground near Butler and Bassett streets. Emergency services were promptly called to the scene just before 7:50 p.m., and the young man was swiftly transported by ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The community was left in shock and mourning over the loss of a teenager described by many as a good kid with a promising future.
Kaiden was a sophomore at Hill Regional Career High School, where he was known as a personable and well-liked student who worked hard and was active in his community. He had a deep passion for basketball, playing for the New Haven Heat in the AAU and looking forward to the upcoming varsity season with the Career Panthers. Beyond his love for sports and a keen sense of fashion, Kaiden was remembered for his strong Christian faith, earning him the affectionate nickname "Pastor K" from his family because he would preach like a preacher from a young age. His family, devastated by their loss, recalled him as a loving and supportive individual who wanted to be successful and make everyone proud.
The investigation into Kaiden's death revealed that he was likely shot on the grounds of the Lincoln-Bassett Community School, which was closed at the time, before he ran and collapsed. In the days that followed, the New Haven Police Department worked diligently to uncover the circumstances of the shooting. Their investigation led to the arrest of a 13-year-old suspect who was charged with murder. Police indicated that the suspect and Kaiden knew each other and may have had a past conflict. Due to the suspect's age, the case is being handled in juvenile court, and the warrants are sealed from public view. While an arrest has been made, police have suggested that more arrests could be possible as the investigation continues.
