On the evening of March 4, 2016, a single gunshot shattered the night in New Haven, Connecticut, ending the life of 25-year-old Brent D. Bennett, a Black male from the neighboring city of West Haven. The tragic events began to unfold at approximately 9:05 p.m. when a woman, driving a white Honda, placed a frantic 911 call. She reported that her passenger, Bennett, had been shot and was gravely injured.
Police were initially dispatched to the intersection of Orange and Eld streets, but
the vehicle was no longer there. The driver had continued for a short distance before parking on State Street, between Eld and Bradley Streets. There, responding officers discovered Bennett in the passenger seat, suffering from a severe gunshot wound to his chest. He was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital, but despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly before 11 p.m.
Investigators quickly determined that the location where Bennett was found was not where the shooting had occurred. Their investigation led them approximately six blocks away to an apartment at 50 Walnut Street. It is believed that this apartment was the primary crime scene where Bennett was fatally wounded. Detectives spent hours combing through the residence, gathering evidence in an effort to piece together the sequence of events that led to the deadly shooting.
In the years that have passed since Brent D. Bennett's death, his case has remained an open and active investigation. Despite appeals to the public for information and the efforts of the New Haven Police Department, no arrests have been made in connection with his murder. The identity of any suspect or suspects remains unknown, leaving a painful void for his family and friends, who continue to await answers and justice for his untimely death.
