In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Bessemer, Alabama, a domestic dispute escalated into a fatal encounter. On July 6, 2025, 33-year-old Gumero Olvera Castro was involved in an altercation with his brother-in-law, Luis Rey Guerro Martinez. The argument took a tragic turn when Martinez allegedly shot Castro. Jefferson County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of a person shot in the 800 block of Willow Bend Lane at approximately 2:23 a.m.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Gumero Olvera Castro suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of Concord Fire & Rescue who also responded to the scene, Castro succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the death of the husband and father quickly pointed towards his brother-in-law as the primary suspect. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office identified 35-year-old Luis Rey Guerro Martinez as the individual responsible for the shooting. As a result of their preliminary investigation, authorities secured a warrant for Martinez's arrest on the charge of Capital Murder. The search for Martinez extended beyond the borders of Alabama as law enforcement agencies worked to bring him into custody.
The day after the fatal shooting, on Monday, July 7, 2025, at approximately 9:35 a.m., the search for Luis Rey Guerro Martinez came to an end. He was apprehended by the U.S. Border Patrol as he attempted to cross into Mexico. Following his detention, arrangements were made by Jefferson County Sheriff's detectives, in coordination with the U.S. Border Patrol and the Kennedy County Sheriff's Office in Texas, to extradite Martinez back to Alabama to face the capital murder charge for the death of his brother-in-law.
