On October 1, 1981, Tommy Lee Thedford, a 37-year-old police officer from Bessemer, Alabama, was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a burglary suspect. At the time of the incident, Officer Thedford was on duty and had been involved in a stakeout related to the burglary.
