On the afternoon of Saturday, March 30, 2019, a burst of violence in Bessemer, Alabama, ended a young man's life. Tavarus Jamal Johnson, a 26-year-old male, was in the 1200 block of Longbrook Drive at approximately 2:15 p.m. when gunfire erupted. When police arrived at the scene, they found Johnson suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders rushed him to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where medical staff worked to save him. Despite their efforts, Tavarus Johnson was pronounced dead at 3:03 p.m. from the fatal injuries he had sustained. His death marked one of several homicides in the Birmingham area that year.
The Bessemer Police Department began an intensive investigation into the shooting. A breakthrough came quickly when an off-duty officer spotted two individuals believed to be connected to the incident. The officer was able to apprehend both suspects a short distance from where the shooting had occurred.
Following the arrests, authorities charged one of the suspects, 22-year-old Nykeil Deshawn Brown of Bessemer, with murder. He was held on a $100,000 bond. As the investigation continued, a second arrest was made. In May 2019, 19-year-old Quindarrius Antonio Brown was also charged with murder in connection with Johnson's death. As of that month, the case against both men was proceeding through the legal system.
