On December 6, 2014, 19-year-old Michael Devin Dempsey, also known as Devin Howell, was fatally shot while seated in a car at the Y Food Mart, located at the intersection of Fairfax Avenue and Owen Avenue in Bessemer, Alabama. The incident occurred during an argument that ensued after Howell exchanged counterfeit money for fake drugs while his mother was inside the store attending to a spare tire repair.
