Tafari Shalamon Simmons, a 32-year-old Black/African American man, was killed on October 6, 2017, after gunfire left him on a quiet stretch of roadway in Hueytown, near Birmingham—close enough to the places he knew, yet far enough to feel abandoned. Not long after 9 a.m., his body was discovered in the 6400 block of Johns Road, and authorities focused on the gunshot wounds as the reason his life ended there, in the open, where anyone might pass and wonder how he came to be.
