In the fading light of a Sunday evening in Bessemer, Alabama, on February 9, 2020, the life of 17-year-old Zykeith Peavy was tragically cut short. Peavy, a Black male, had arranged to meet with a 15-year-old acquaintance on the 4600 block of Little Drive before 10 p.m. for the purpose of purchasing a gun.
The planned transaction, however, took a violent turn. An altercation erupted between the two teenagers, and in the ensuing chaos, Peavy was shot.
He was quickly transported to UAB Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life, but his injuries proved too severe. Just after 11 p.m., Zykeith Peavy was pronounced dead.
In the aftermath of the fatal shooting, the Bessemer Police Department launched an investigation that swiftly led them to a suspect. The 15-year-old individual whom Peavy had arranged to meet was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with murder and the illegal possession of a firearm.
The community mourned the loss of a young man remembered by his family and friends as a loving son, brother, uncle, nephew, and friend. His funeral services were held on February 17, 2020, followed by his burial at Oakland Memorial Gardens Cemetery, marking a somber end to a life ended by violence.
