In the early hours of October 1, 2022, a life was violently cut short within the walls of the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer, Alabama. Denarieya Letrex Smith, a 30-year-old Black man, was brutally beaten and stabbed by at least one other inmate. Despite the reported cries for help from other incarcerated individuals, correctional officers were not said to have responded in a timely manner, and Smith succumbed to what the Jefferson County Coroner's Office described as 'sha ...
