On October 1, 2022, Denarieya Letrex "DL" Smith, a 30-year-old inmate at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer, Alabama, was fatally assaulted by fellow inmates. The attack occurred in the early hours of the morning, during which Smith was brutally beaten and stabbed. Despite the desperate pleas for assistance from other inmates, prison guards failed to respond promptly, resulting in Smith's death from his injuries.
