In the late summer of 2014, a tragic and violent series of events unfolded that led to the death of 21-year-old Briana Brooks. On the night of August 30th, Brooks and her 23-year-old fiancé, Jeronta Brown, were ambushed outside a home on Coleen Court in Decatur, Georgia. Assailants, posing as FBI agents, handcuffed the young couple and forced them into a van, beginning a terrifying ordeal for them and their families.
The kidnappers, later identified as Andre Gay and Richard Wilson, held the couple captive while demanding a ransom from their relatives. The motive for this heinous act was a mistaken belief that one of their family members had recently come into a large sum of money from an insurance settlement. For hours, the captors made calls to the family, but their demands were not met. The couple was then driven to Ridge Avenue in northwest Atlanta, where they were shot execution-style in the back of the head and left for dead on the side of the road, still handcuffed together.
When discovered, Jeronta Brown had already succumbed to his injuries. Briana Brooks, who was seven months pregnant at the time, was found unconscious but still alive. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors worked to save both her and her unborn child. In a bittersweet turn of events, her baby girl was delivered prematurely. Tragically, Briana Brooks' injuries were too severe, and she was removed from life support a few days later, never having the chance to hold her newborn daughter. She was also the mother of two other young children with Brown.
The investigation into the brutal crime led to the identification of Andre Gay and Richard 'Fathead' Wilson as the primary suspects. Both men were convicted felons who had met in prison and were out on parole. Law enforcement officials revealed that the duo was responsible for a string of violent crimes, including at least seven murders in Fulton County. Andre Gay was arrested in September 2014, and Richard Wilson was apprehended in October of that same year in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was attempting to sell an assault rifle.
Faced with an overwhelming amount of evidence and the prospect of the death penalty, both Andre Gay, then 44, and Richard Wilson, then 46, chose to plead guilty. In September 2018, they admitted to a multitude of charges, including murder, felony murder, kidnapping with bodily injury, and kidnapping for ransom. They were each sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, ensuring they would spend the rest of their lives in prison for the senseless and brutal murders of Briana Brooks and Jeronta Brown.
