In the autumn of 2021, the life of a 67-year-old African American woman, Mary Belle Clark, was tragically cut short in an act of violence that struck at her own home in Decatur, Georgia. On October 8th, what should have been an ordinary day turned into a scene of sorrow and loss when gunfire erupted, claiming her life.
The events leading to her untimely death began with a dispute. An argument had reportedly taken place earlier between a man and a member of Ms. Clark's family. In what authorities have described as an act of retaliation, that man is alleged to have later fired multiple shots into Mary Belle Clark's residence. Tragically, Ms. Clark was inside her home at the time and was struck by a stray bullet. The injuries she sustained in the shooting proved to be fatal.
In the wake of the violence, law enforcement officials began an investigation that quickly led them to a suspect. On October 19, 2021, officers with the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office located and arrested 33-year-old Quaveous Antwon Smith at a residence in Decatur. He was taken into custody without incident and subsequently charged with murder in connection with the death of Mary Belle Clark. Following his arrest, he was booked into the DeKalb County Jail, where he was held without bond.
