Lauren Bullis, a 40-year-old woman, was killed on April 13, 2026, during what authorities described as a violent, random shooting spree across the Atlanta-area suburbs. She lived in the Decatur area and was walking her dog in a residential neighborhood near Battle Forrest Drive, off Flat Shoals Road in DeKalb County, when the morning routine that neighbors recognized so well turned into a fatal attack. Police and federal officials said she was shot and stabbed, and she was later identified as a Department of Homeland Security employee who worked as an auditor with the DHS Office of Inspector General.
The attack on Bullis came after other violence had already unfolded overnight. Investigators said the spree began around 1 a.m. in the Decatur area, where 31-year-old Prianna Weathers was shot and killed outside a restaurant. About an hour later, another victim, Tony Matthews, was shot multiple times while sleeping outside a Kroger in Brookhaven. Matthews survived long enough to be taken for medical treatment but later died from his injuries, making him the third person killed in the series of attacks.
Bullis was found later that morning after police responded to a report of a person shot in the neighborhood. A witness told local media she heard several gunshots, ran outside, and saw a woman down across the street with a man standing over her. Neighbors described Bullis as a familiar, friendly presence in the community, someone often seen on her walks. Her death shook the neighborhood because it appeared to come without warning, in a place where people were used to seeing her simply moving through the day with her dog.
Authorities arrested Olaolukitan Adon Abel, an Atlanta-area man described in reports as a 26-year-old U.S. Navy veteran born in the United Kingdom and naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 2022. Police linked him to the attacks in Decatur, Brookhaven, and the neighborhood where Bullis was killed. He was charged with offenses including malice murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Reports also said he waived his first court appearance after his arrest.
Officials said Abel had a criminal history before the April 13 attacks, including prior convictions cited by federal and news sources for offenses such as sexual battery, battery against a police officer, obstruction, assault with a deadly weapon, and vandalism. Investigators described the killings as random, and no clear personal connection between Abel and Bullis was reported. The violence appeared to move from one location to another over several hours, beginning with Weathers, then Matthews, and ending with Bullis during her walk.
The criminal case did not proceed to trial. On April 21, 2026, about eight days after he was booked into the DeKalb County Jail, Abel was found unresponsive in his cell. Jail staff and medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the jail. Authorities said there was no immediate indication of foul play, though an internal review was opened into the circumstances of his death. His death ended the possibility of a trial or conviction, leaving the case with an arrest and filed charges, but no courtroom resolution for Bullis’s family or the families of the other victims.
