On an early Wednesday morning in Decatur, Georgia, just two weeks before her sixteenth birthday, 15-year-old Keaira Palmer's life was tragically cut short. On August 3, 2016, the female teenager was walking out of a convenience store on Glenwood Road with three other individuals when a violent shootout erupted. Keaira was struck in the neck by a bullet and, despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, she succumbed to her injuries. Her mother, who had heard the gunshots from their home, arrived at the scene as her daughter was being placed in the ambulance and tragically felt she witnessed her daughter's last breath. The three men with Keaira were also shot but survived their injuries.
The investigation into Keaira's death quickly pointed to a feud between rival gangs. Authorities determined the shooting was an act of retaliation orchestrated by Tahja T. Williams, also known as 'Mayhem,' an alleged high-ranking member of the Six Deuce Brim Bloods. The motive appeared to be a response to Williams being robbed by members of a rival gang, who then reportedly bragged about the incident. Keaira, who was described by her family as an innocent bystander who had just gone to the store for a snack, was caught in the deadly crossfire.
In the week following the shooting, law enforcement officials announced the arrests of six individuals in connection with Keaira's murder. Four adults, identified as 17-year-old Roderick Harris, 22-year-old Michael Miller, 18-year-old Sharod Jackson, and 18-year-old Roderick Jackson, along with two juveniles, were taken into custody. They faced a range of serious charges, including felony murder, aggravated assault, and criminal gang activity. The alleged ringleader, 24-year-old Tahja Williams, fled the state, prompting a manhunt that involved the FBI. He was eventually apprehended and booked into the DeKalb County jail in late October 2016.
The legal proceedings brought a measure of justice for Keaira's family. Williams' co-defendants, Mike Miller, Roderick Jackson, Roderick Harris, Tareco Jenkins, and Sharrod Jackson, all accepted guilty pleas for their involvement in the shooting and were each sentenced to 25 years in prison. In December 2017, Tahja Williams was convicted by a jury on charges of murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault. A DeKalb County Superior Court Judge subsequently sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole for orchestrating the drive-by shooting that resulted in the senseless death of Keaira Palmer.
