In the early morning hours of September 9, 2024, a devastating fire engulfed a home on Cohassett Lane in Decatur, Georgia. The blaze was so intense that the house was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived around 1:30 a.m., causing a partial collapse of the structure and preventing immediate entry. Once the fire was extinguished and the scene deemed safe, the bodies of 28-year-old Brittany R. Hall and her 35-year-old boyfriend, Derris D. Woods, were discovered inside the charred remains of the residence.
Initially, the couple's death was investigated as a result of the house fire. However, the DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office later determined that both Hall and Woods had been shot to death before the fire was set. This revelation transformed the case into a double homicide investigation. Family members described the couple as loving, and Woods was a father to five children.
