An African American woman, Jackson was a beloved special education teacher at Hamilton E. Holmes Elementary School in East Point, where she also coached cheerleading. Earlier that day, Jackson's home on Derwin Brown Drive was alive with the laughter and warmth of a family gathering, celebrating both a reunion and the life of her grandmother. Her sister, Crystal Gray, recalled that there was no hint of trouble or tension between Jackson and her live-in girlfriend, 24-year-old Janai Colbert. However, shortly after the family departed, the atmosphere of celebration turned somber. Around 10 p.m., a roommate heard Jackson and Colbert arguing, a dispute that was soon followed by the sound of a single gunshot. Jackson managed to stumble into her roommate's room, uttering that Colbert had shot her before she collapsed.
