In the late hours of November 10, 2022, the life of 17-year-old Jayne Salazar Chavez was tragically cut short in a hail of bullets outside her home in Decatur, Georgia. A junior at Towers High School, Jayne was not only the recently crowned homecoming queen but also the respected group commander of her Air Force JROTC program. That evening, she was sitting in a parked car with her friend, 24-year-old Brandon Lee Wilson, an Army soldier who was home on leave for Veteran's Day to surprise her.
The tragic events of that night were set in motion by a lover's quarrel. Wilson had become suspicious that Jayne was seeing someone else and, after discovering a suggestive text message on her phone, a heated argument ensued over the phone between Wilson and the other man, later identified as 24-year-old Nakia Dunta Dorsey. Later that evening, as Jayne and Wilson sat in the car outside her residence, Dorsey approached the vehicle. Wilson reported seeing a red laser sight on his face before a man dressed in black opened fire on the car, riddling it with over 20 bullets. Wilson, who was shot in the leg, managed to drive to a nearby gas station to seek help. Jayne, however, sustained fatal gunshot wounds to her arm and torso and was found deceased inside the vehicle.
Following an investigation, which was aided by an anonymous tip and analysis of social media messages and cell phone location data, authorities identified Nakia Dunta Dorsey as the shooter. He was arrested on January 12, 2023, and charged with murder and two counts of aggravated assault. On August 8, 2023, a DeKalb County jury found Dorsey guilty of felony murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and two counts of aggravated assault. Subsequently, a judge sentenced Nakia Dorsey to life in prison plus an additional 25 years to be served consecutively.
