In a tragic turn of events that would remain a mystery for years, 36-year-old Jerrell Jenkins of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, lost his life on December 13, 1998. On that day, his body was discovered in a ditch by a child on their way to school. The cause of his death was two gunshot wounds to the chest, fired from a. 357 caliber handgun. For a long time, the case of who was responsible for Jenkins' untimely death remained unsolved, leaving his family and the community searching for answers.
The initial investigation did not immediately lead to any suspects or arrests, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the brutal crime.
The truth behind Jerrell Jenkins' murder finally came to light in 2005, years after the fact, through a confession from an inmate already serving a life sentence for another killing. Kenneth Dewayne Williams, who was incarcerated for the murder of a University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff cheerleader, Dominique Hurd, which occurred on the very same day as Jenkins' death, admitted to also being responsible for Jenkins' slaying. In a letter to the editor of the Pine Bluff Commercial, Williams confessed to robbing and shooting Jerrell Jenkins. This admission brought a long-awaited resolution to the case, officially identifying Jenkins' killer.
Following his confession, Kenneth Williams pleaded guilty to the capital murder, aggravated robbery, and theft of property in relation to the death of Jerrell Jenkins. This led to an additional life sentence for Williams, who was already imprisoned. Williams' criminal history was extensive and included an escape from prison in 1999, during which he committed another murder. Ultimately, Kenneth Dewayne Williams was executed by the state of Arkansas on April 27, 2017, for his various crimes, bringing a final, somber close to the violent path he had carved, which included the tragic and for a time, unsolved, murder of Jerrell Jenkins.
