In the early hours of March 18, 2017, the city of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, was disturbed by the sound of gunfire, leading to a tragic series of events. At approximately 1:00 a.m., police officers were dispatched to the intersection of 27th and Cherry Street following reports of a vehicle collision. Upon their arrival, they discovered a car that had crashed and its driver, 30-year-old David Ibemesi, a Black / African American male, suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency services rushed him to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead in the emergency room.
As the investigation into Ibemesi's death began, law enforcement received additional calls about gunfire in the same vicinity. This led them to another crime scene near 18th and Oak Street, where they found another individual who had been shot in the head but was still alive. The identity of this second victim was not publicly disclosed. The area around 26th and Oak Street yielded significant evidence of a shootout, with investigators recovering more than 15 shell casings from the scene.
Despite a thorough investigation into the events that led to David Ibemesi's death, no suspects were immediately identified. The Pine Bluff Police Department has continued to seek information from the public to help solve the case. As of the most recent available information, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide, and the case remains unsolved. The community mourned the loss of Ibemesi, with his funeral service held on March 29, 2017, at St. Peter Catholic Church, followed by his interment at Forrest Lawn Cemetery.
