On January 3rd, 68-year-old Anna Carroll became one of the victims in a string of murders that would later be attributed to a possible serial killer the media dubbed the 'Frankford Slasher.' Anna was discovered in her home on the 1400 block of Ritner Street, having been tragically stabbed to death.
The scene was one of profound violence; she had been sexually assaulted, and the weapon, a kitchen knife, was left embedded in her body. Her death was not an isolated incident but part of a disturbing pattern of violence against women that haunted the Frankford area and surrounding neighborhoods for years.
The investigation into Anna's murder and the others that followed was a complex and frustrating endeavor for law enforcement. Her case was linked with several other homicides that occurred between 1985 and 1990, all involving female victims who were sexually assaulted and brutally stabbed. A man named Leonard Christopher was arrested and convicted for the 1990 murder of another victim, Carol Dowd. However, this conviction has been a point of contention and doubt for many. Christopher, a Black man, did not match the description of a middle-aged white man who was reportedly seen with several of the victims shortly before their deaths. Furthermore, another murder occurred in the same violent fashion while Christopher was incarcerated, leading many to believe that the true killer was never brought to justice for the series of slayings that included the tragic death of Anna Carroll.
