On June 22, 2024, 47-year-old Heather Rainey, a mother and U.S. Army veteran, was fatally shot in North Philadelphia. Around 10:39 p.m., Philadelphia Housing Authority officers found her with a gunshot wound to the chest on the 700 block of West Poplar Street. She was transported to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly before 11 p.m.
At the scene, Rainey's 2017 Dodge Durango was discovered with its engine running, a smashed window, and personal belongings scattered inside. A hammer was found placed on top of the vehicle. These details led investigators to suspect that Rainey was the victim of a carjacking.
Following a six-month investigation, authorities identified 21-year-old Tysean Forsythe as a suspect in Rainey's murder. On December 11, 2024, while investigating a stolen vehicle on the 2000 block of East Wishart Street, officers encountered Forsythe. Recognizing him as a fugitive, they pursued and apprehended him on the 1900 block of East Allegheny Avenue.
Forsythe has been charged with murder, conspiracy, carjacking, robbery, and violations of the Uniform Firearms Act in connection with Rainey's death. He is currently being held without bail, with a court appearance scheduled for December 30, 2024.
