On February 24, 2025, 49-year-old Sean Joseph Avary was fatally shot in far west Bexar County, Texas. Deputies from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance call at a residence on Picardy Wheel around 6:41 p.m. Upon arrival, they encountered the suspect, 62-year-old Brian Ray Leigh, who admitted to shooting Avary during an altercation.
Avary sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at 7:27 p.m.
Witnesses, including Avary’s spouse and children, were present at the time of the incident. Leigh claimed self-defense, stating that Avary approached him in an irritated manner before the shooting. However, video evidence reviewed by authorities showed the sequence of events leading up to the fatal encounter. Leigh was found in possession of a 9mm firearm, which was used in the shooting.
Following the investigation, Leigh was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He was taken into custody and booked on Monday night. Authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the relationship between Avary and Leigh, as well as any prior disputes that may have contributed to the confrontation.
