On February 27, 2025, around 3:10 PM, 17-year-old Irwan Paez was fatally shot outside a McDonald's restaurant at 185 West Road in Houston. The incident stemmed from an argument during a soccer game the previous day, where one group of juveniles reportedly displayed a weapon to another group. These tensions carried over into school conflicts.
The following day, Paez was with a group of friends eating at McDonald's when an older model Ram 1500 pickup truck entered the drive-thru.
The truck had previously picked up the suspected shooter at a nearby grocery store. When Paez approached the vehicle, a verbal altercation broke out. During this confrontation, a passenger in the Ram truck fired shots at Paez. The truck then fled the scene, running over Paez in the process. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the 17-year-old deceased at the scene.
Law enforcement later located the red Dodge Ram truck in the area of Laura Koppe Road, and multiple individuals were initially detained. By March 7, 2025, two arrests had been made in connection with the case. Jose De Jimenez Reyes, 19, and Jesus Agular, 23, were charged with felony tampering with evidence. They are accused of disposing of the red truck involved in the shooting. Reyes allegedly removed items from the vehicle and attempted to conceal the front license plate. At the time of the incident, both men were out on bail for previous weapons-related charges.
Court documents have referenced an unnamed minor, identified as Agular's nephew, as a suspect in the shooting. The case has been referred to a Harris County grand jury. The Houston Police Department has withheld releasing photos of the suspects due to the ongoing investigation and their potential roles as witnesses in the grand jury process. Agular was not in custody at the time of the reports.
The victim's family has stated that Paez had no known conflicts with anyone and was known for being deeply caring towards his friends and family. A GoFundMe page was established to assist with funeral expenses.
