On May 28, 2023, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Houston police officers responded to reports of a shooting at a gas station located at 14711 Main Street. Upon arrival, they discovered 33-year-old Larenzo Terrell in the parking lot, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services transported Terrell to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Investigators determined that the shooting occurred in a nearby wooded area at the end of Nicholas Street, a dead-end road southwest of the gas station. Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots from the wooded area and observed a man, later identified as 32-year-old Joshua Lashun McWilliam, also known by the nickname "Scooter," emerging from the woods shortly thereafter. One witness noted seeing McWilliam tucking a small black revolver into his waistband as he walked toward his home.
Further investigation led authorities to identify McWilliam as the primary suspect in Terrell's death. On June 7, 2023, a murder charge was filed against him in the 209th State District Court. Despite efforts to locate him, McWilliam remained at large until June 15, 2024, when he was apprehended in Texas City by members of the Gulf Coast Fugitive Task Force. The arrest was made without incident, and McWilliam was subsequently taken into custody to face charges related to the fatal shooting of Terrell.
At the time of his arrest, McWilliam was 33 years old and was also facing additional charges in Galveston County, including drug and theft offenses. As of June 17, 2024, he was being held in the Galveston County Jail, awaiting transfer to Harris County to face the murder charge. Court dates for McWilliam's proceedings had not yet been set, and it was unclear whether he had legal representation.
The arrest of McWilliam brought a measure of closure to the investigation into Terrell's death, though the legal process was expected to continue as authorities pursued justice for the victim and his family. The case highlighted ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing violent crimes within urban communities.
