On November 15, 2024, 37-year-old Jose Torres, a dispatcher for the Spring Branch Independent School District Police Department in Houston, Texas, was tragically shot and killed at his residence on Mallard Stream Court in the Willow Springs subdivision. Torres was reportedly performing yard work and was expected to pick up his wife and children from school that afternoon.
When he failed to arrive, his family secured another ride home, where they discovered him deceased from multiple gunshot wounds inside their home.
Investigators determined that Torres was confronted and shot by an assailant while he was working in his yard. Evidence suggested that items were missing from the home, indicating a possible robbery.
On November 17, 2024, authorities arrested Torres' 22-year-old nephew, Antonio Guzman, in connection with the murder. Guzman was apprehended at his residence in the 7200 block of Fairbanks North Houston Road by members of the Houston Police Department SWAT team. He was subsequently charged with murder.
According to court documents, Guzman had been raised by Torres and his wife for the past six years. Guzman allegedly confessed to the shooting, stating that he felt unloved and unwelcome by Torres, particularly after the family moved to a new home.
The Spring Branch ISD Police Department expressed profound grief over the loss of Torres, describing him as a hardworking, kind-hearted man who deeply loved his family. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Guzman remains in custody, facing charges of murder, with a bond set at $200,000. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Torres' death continues as the community mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant.
