On March 24, 2025, authorities in Henderson County, Texas, responded to a distress call regarding the shooting of 30-year-old Samantha Moore in the Bonita Point subdivision near Gun Barrel City. Samantha Moore, a Hispanic woman, was found with gunshot wounds on the front porch of her brother’s residence. Emergency responders transported her to UT Health Emergency Room in Gun Barrel City, but despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.
Investigators quickly identified
Samantha Moore’s younger brother, 27-year-old John Clague, as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting. Witnesses reported that Clague was in a state of hysteria after an argument erupted between him and his sister over $1,500 and four ounces of marijuana. The dispute escalated, leading Clague to allegedly shoot Samantha Moore before fleeing the scene.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, Gun Barrel City Police Department, the Henderson County District Attorney’s Office, and Texas Rangers, launched an extensive search for Clague. Social media posts were circulated to aid in locating him. Authorities later received information that Clague had been transported to a residence in the Harbor Point subdivision in Gun Barrel City. A search warrant was issued for the property, and officers attempted to negotiate with Clague, who refused to respond.
During the operation, a woman identified as Vicki Fletcher exited the residence and informed deputies that Clague was hiding in a travel trailer on the property. Tactical officers attempted to make contact, but Clague attempted to flee on foot. A police K9 was deployed, leading to his capture. Clague sustained injuries during the apprehension and was transported to the Henderson County Jail, where he remains in custody with bail set at $2,000,000.
While speaking with Fletcher, deputies observed her discarding an item into a ditch. Upon investigation, officers discovered suspected methamphetamine. Fletcher was subsequently arrested for possession of a controlled substance and tampering with evidence. She was transported to the Henderson County Jail, where she awaits arraignment.
