On April 21, 2023, at approximately 7:20 p.m., Henderson County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of a shooting in the Bonita Point subdivision near Gun Barrel City, Texas. Upon arrival, they discovered 25-year-old Alexis Deanne Garoutte slumped over in a truck, having sustained a gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Garoutte was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation led authorities to 32-year-old Chaz White of Mabank, Texas.
On May 15, 2023, the Henderson County Tactical Team executed search and arrest warrants at White's residence in the Bonita Point area, taking him into custody without incident. White was subsequently charged with murder in connection to Garoutte's death.
During the search of White's residence, deputies uncovered several firearms, methamphetamine, heroin, and a significant amount of fentanyl. Sheriff Botie Hillhouse expressed alarm at the quantity of fentanyl found, highlighting the ongoing concerns about the presence of such dangerous substances in the community.
Further developments in the case occurred when White's wife was also charged with murder in connection to Garoutte's death, indicating a broader scope of involvement.
Alexis Garoutte, born on March 12, 1998, was a resident of Mabank, Texas. She was known for her love of horses, competitive cheerleading, and spending time with friends. She is survived by her mother, Tara Castro, her sister, Brooke Lyn Garoutte, and her two sons, Jayden Dean Farrell and Jaxson Dean Murrow.
A Celebration of Life Memorial was held on April 30, 2023, at Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home in Mabank, where family and friends gathered to honor her memory.
