On the evening of December 30, 2024, 33-year-old African American man Diondre Bittle was fatally shot in the parking lot of the Century University City Apartments on Dave McKinney Avenue in Charlotte, North Carolina. Responding to a 9:15 p.m. call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers found Bittle deceased at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
Preliminary investigations indicated that Bittle had arranged a meeting for a drug transaction involving a quarter pound of marijuana. Surveillance footage and witness accounts revealed that two individuals, a woman and a man, arrived at the location, entered Bittle’s black 2014 Mercedes-Benz C250, and subsequently drove away. The vehicle was later found abandoned with multiple bullet holes, shattered windows, a slashed rear tire, and blood inside.
Investigators identified 35-year-old Sabrina Nayeele Roth as a suspect through forensic analysis of Bittle’s cell phone, which contained communications arranging the drug sale. Roth was arrested on January 2, 2025, and charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Further investigation led to the arrest of 25-year-old Travaree D’Von Miller on February 13, 2025. Miller faced the same charges as Roth. Both suspects are accused of conspiring to rob Bittle during the arranged drug transaction.
Prior to this incident, Diondre Bittle had been acquitted in 2017 of the 2016 murder of 49-year-old Shawn Parker in Charlotte. Despite his previous legal troubles, Bittle's death has been met with calls for justice from the community.
