On October 11, 2023, at approximately 5:00 a.m., officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) responded to a reported shooting in the 6600 block of Wenda Place, located in east Charlotte near Idlewild Road. Upon arrival, they discovered 34-year-old Simon Yemane Semere outside a residence, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Semere was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Neighbors reported hearing a single gunshot followed by a man screaming for help. Some witnesses observed a vehicle leaving the area shortly after the incident, though details about the vehicle were unclear due to low visibility.

Following an intensive investigation, CMPD detectives identified 26-year-old Jakkael Best as a suspect in the case. On October 14, 2023, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) arrested Best without incident. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon. After an interview with detectives, Best was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

The motive behind the shooting has not been publicly disclosed, and it remains unclear whether Semere and Best were acquainted prior to the incident. CMPD has indicated that the investigation is active and ongoing, with additional information to be released as it becomes available.

Semere's death marked the second homicide in Charlotte within a seven-hour span, contributing to growing concerns about violence in the community. Local residents have expressed unease, emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures and community engagement to prevent such tragedies.

Authorities continue to urge anyone with information related to this case to contact CMPD's Homicide Unit directly or provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers. Community cooperation is deemed essential in ensuring justice for the victim and addressing broader public safety concerns.
