In the quiet community of Sumter, South Carolina, a disagreement between two acquaintances escalated into a fatal encounter on a Tuesday evening. Christopher Abrams, a 56-year-old man, was fatally shot on January 14, 2025, following a physical altercation. The incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. in the vicinity of Brent and Whitehorse streets. Authorities from the Sumter County Sheriff's Office were alerted to the sound of gunshots in the area and, upon arrival, discovered Abrams with a gunshot
wound, a witness by his side attempting to render aid. He was quickly transported to Prisma Health Tuomey hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting swiftly pointed to an acquaintance of Abrams, 35-year-old Demetrius Rico Fleming. According to witnesses, the two men were involved in a physical fight when Fleming allegedly produced a handgun and shot Abrams. Law enforcement, with the assistance of a K-9 unit, was able to locate evidence and subsequently apprehend Fleming near the scene of the crime. The Sumter County Sheriff's Office described the shooting as an isolated incident stemming from a disagreement between the two men who knew each other.
Following his arrest, Demetrius Rico Fleming was charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain crimes. He was denied bond and is being held at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center. Christopher Abrams, born on December 25, 1968, was remembered by his family and friends in the community. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston to officially determine the cause of death.
