In the quiet city of Sumter, South Carolina, a gathering of friends turned tragic on an April evening in 2015. DiQuon Jadar Morgan, a 24-year-old male, was at a home in the 300 block of Bowman Drive when his life was cut short. On the night of Monday, April 27, 2015, police responded to a call of a shooting at the residence after 10 p.m.
Upon their arrival, they found that Morgan had sustained a gunshot wound to his upper torso.
He was rushed to Tuomey Regional Medical Center, but the injury proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The initial investigation by the Sumter Police Department suggested that the shooting was accidental.
According to law enforcement, a 22-year-old man, Eugene Earl Martin, was at the house showing a semi-automatic handgun to a group of friends. Investigators believe that at the time of the incident, the clip was not in the handgun. However, the weapon discharged, and the bullet struck Morgan.
In the wake of the shooting, Eugene Earl Martin was taken into custody and charged with involuntary manslaughter. He was subsequently booked at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center.
