In the early evening of April 9, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace on Broad Street in Sumter, South Carolina, leaving a young man dead and a community searching for answers. The victim was identified as 27-year-old Alki Williams of Mayesville, a male who was found inside his vehicle which had come to a stop in a business parking area. He had been struck by gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Sumter Police Department, Williams was driving near the
intersection with Woodlawn Avenue at approximately 5 p.m. when another vehicle, described as white, pulled up alongside his. Shots were fired from the white vehicle, which then sped away from the scene. Investigators quickly determined the shooting was an isolated incident and believed that Williams likely knew his attacker. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed at The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston to determine the exact cause of death.
As the investigation progressed, law enforcement officials worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. The Sumter Police Department and the Sumter County Coroner's Office collaborated on the case, seeking information from the public to help identify those responsible for Williams' death. Their efforts would later lead to the identification and arrest of suspects in connection with the crime.
