In Sumter, South Carolina, a Friday afternoon dispute tragically escalated, leading to the death of 45-year-old Jermaine Williams, a Black male. On August 19, 2016, an argument erupted between Williams and a man identified as 74-year-old Nathan 'Smoot' McBride at McBride's home on Council Street.
Following the initial confrontation, Williams departed from the residence in his vehicle. However, the disagreement was far from over. McBride allegedly pursued Williams in his own car.
The situation reached a fatal climax near the intersection of Council Street and Barlette Street. When Williams stopped and exited his vehicle, he was shot.
Law enforcement officers responded to reports of a shooting around 3:00 p.m. and discovered Williams' body in the road. Their investigation quickly led them to Nathan McBride. He was located at his home shortly after the incident and taken into custody. A weapon was also recovered by the police.
