In the early hours of May 12, 2025, the life of 48-year-old Caucasian female, Jamie Lynn Borchert, was tragically cut short in her Sioux Falls, South Dakota, home. Police were dispatched to a residence in the 1100 block of North Minnesota Avenue shortly after 2 a.m. following a report of an unresponsive woman. Upon arrival, they discovered Borchert deceased from a gunshot wound to the head.
The investigation into her death quickly focused on a suspect close to home: her 22-year-old son,
Nathaniel Borchert. He was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged with second-degree murder. Investigators recovered a pistol from the residence, which is believed to be the weapon used in the fatal shooting. Reports indicated a history of domestic disputes at the home, with police having been called to the residence for family-related conflicts prior to the deadly incident. Other family members were present in the house when the police arrived.
As the investigation progressed, the charges against Nathaniel Borchert were upgraded in early June 2025 to include premeditated first-degree murder and manslaughter. During the course of the homicide investigation, authorities also discovered child pornography on his phone, leading to multiple additional charges, though these are reportedly unrelated to the murder of his mother. A judge set his bond at $500,000 cash only.

She had earned a bachelor's degree from South Dakota State University and a master's degree from Sioux Falls Seminary, with aspirations of becoming a counselor. Her love for animals was well-known, as she often rescued stray animals. She was a creative person who enjoyed cooking and canning. Her death left a profound void in the lives of her family and friends.
