Brianna Marie Mattix-Hatch, a 26-year-old white woman, was shot inside a Sioux Falls apartment on the morning of September 14, 2022, after police were dispatched for a reported family dispute near the 3600 block of South Willow Avenue. When officers knocked and made a partial entry, they were met by gunfire, grabbed a young child from the doorway to safety, and backed out as negotiations began.
A second child was later heard inside while a large law-enforcement presence, including a SWAT vehicle, converged on the scene. She died at the apartment, and authorities continued trying to defuse the standoff through calls with the man inside.
Investigators soon identified the suspect as 32-year-old Arthur Rudolph Miguel. During the standoff, after SWAT members entered the unit to rescue the remaining child, Miguel shot himself; he was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital in critical condition and died days later. Police described the shooting as a domestic incident, and records list the victim and suspect as intimate partners. Both children were rescued without physical injuries.
Because the suspected gunman died from a self-inflicted wound following the killing, there were no arrests in the case. Authorities treated the investigation as a murder followed by the suspect's suicide, closing the door on criminal proceedings while leaving a record centered on the loss of a young mother's life and the swift actions that ensured two children survived.
