The evening had been a typical social get-together, with about a dozen people
enjoying the warmth of a fire pit. Among those present were Kellie Reaves, Daniel Carl Kemnitz, 43, and Michael Andrew Thompson, 34. The gathering took an unexpected turn with the arrival of a man later identified as Justin Cody Rackley, 30. Rackley was reportedly a new acquaintance to the group, having been invited to the home after meeting one of the attendees earlier in the evening. According to a fundraising page set up for Kellie's children, he was described as a "strange man" who showed up at the bonfire.
In the early morning hours, around 2:45 a.m., gunfire erupted in the backyard, turning the scene chaotic and deadly. When police responded to calls of a disturbance, they discovered a horrific scene. Kellie Reaves, Daniel Kemnitz, and Michael Thompson had all been fatally shot. Two other individuals at the party sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The incident marked the first triple homicide in Sioux Falls in over half a century.
Police arrested Justin Rackley at the scene and recovered a handgun. Rackley, who had moved to South Dakota from Texas in 2020, was subsequently charged with three counts of first-degree murder. While a definitive motive for the shooting remains unclear, authorities stated that it did not appear to be a robbery or a crime of passion. At his initial court appearance, Rackley pleaded not guilty. A judge set his bond at three million dollars.
