In the early hours of May 12, 2025, the life of 48-year-old Jaime Lynn Borchert, a White/Caucasian female from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was tragically cut short. Police were called to a residence in the 1100 block of North Minnesota Avenue shortly after 2 a.m. for a report of an unresponsive woman. Inside the home, they discovered Borchert, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into her death quickly focused on a
suspect who was present in the home when authorities arrived. Jaime Lynn Borchert's 22-year-old son, Nathaniel Borchert, was arrested in connection with his mother's death. A pistol was recovered from the residence and is believed to be the weapon used in the incident. Reports indicated that there had been a history of family disputes at the home, with police having been called to the residence on previous occasions.
Initially, Nathaniel Borchert was booked on charges of second-degree murder. However, as the investigation progressed, the charges against him were upgraded in early June 2025 to include premeditated first-degree murder and manslaughter. In addition to the charges related to his mother's death, he also faced multiple counts of possession of child pornography, which were discovered during the homicide investigation. A judge set his bond at $500,000 cash only.
Jaime Lynn Borchert was remembered as a compassionate and nurturing individual who was dedicated to helping others. She had earned a bachelor's degree from South Dakota State University in 2007 and a master's degree from Sioux Falls Seminary in 2014, with a passion for social work and aspirations of becoming a counselor. She was known for her love of animals and for tirelessly advocating for those who could not advocate for themselves. Her death sent shockwaves through the community, and her family publicly acknowledged her son's arrest and charges as they made arrangements for her funeral.
